Auto insurance can be a costly expense in your budget. This is especially true if you are under the age of 25 or have people under that age on your policy. Your premiums will also increase if you have a number of traffic violations or claims due to accidents. However, there are a number of ways to save money on the policy with different special discounts. You probably know about a discount for someone attending a driver's education or defensive driving class, but here are some you might not have been aware of until now.

Student Discounts

If your policy covers a driver under the age of 25 who is attending any type of school, there are a few discounts for which you may qualify. The first one is for "good" students. Generally, this includes any student who has a 3.0 GPA or higher. Another discount may be in effect if your child is living further than 100 miles from home to attend school and does not have a vehicle there. Even though the child will be driving your vehicle when home for holidays and during the summer, the discount is for the entire year. 

Billing Discounts

There are a few discounts available that concern your billing preferences. Of course, most companies offer a discount if you pay for the year in full. You can also receive a discount for using automatic payments, meaning they deduct the premium from your bank account on a specified day each month without sending a bill for you to then pay on your own. Paperless billing will also get you a bit of a discount on your payments. Instead of sending you a paper bill in the mail you will receive your billing statements in an email. You may also save money if you go ahead and renew a policy before the current one is expired. Ask the agent how soon you have to renew to receive this discount.

While some of the mentioned discounts do not mean a lot of money by themselves, when you add them together you can lower your premium payments by a nice amount. Talk to your agent about all the available discounts. Make him or her list them off to you regardless of what they may think you qualify for.
